Cb Radio: How It Helped One Woman's Nightmare Become Her Fondest Dream

If you've ever felt lonely or isolated you'll know it's a horrible thing

. Some people enjoy silence, time alone, peaceful days and seek out the quiet life. But most of us need human contact, so even when we enjoy minutes, hours or even days to ourselves, we like to get back to cosy conversation when we're done.

But isolation isn't just a question of having no-one to talk to, it can be very frightening. Small injuries can become big problems if there is no-one you can call upon for help.

I first met Brenda at a Home Owners Association meeting. I had just moved in, she was looking forward to moving out. Brenda had been born and brought up in the city and longed for wide open spaces.

Now she had two children she was determined that they would have the space she had always been denied and was planning a move to the wide open spaces of Montana. We chatted a little at each meeting and then when her husband finally gave up his day job to work full time from home, they realised their dream and moved away.

So I was surprised to hear from Brenda again a few months later. Life had not turned out as she expected. They had their dream property, but her husband travelled a great deal and was not at home as much as they had hoped.

Their nearest neighbour was 5 miles away and Brenda was suffering. Isolation was making her depressed and bad tempered. The freedom she had wanted for her children filled her with fear. What if they roamed the property, were hurt and she couldn't find them? Cellphone reception was non existent and even Internet access was a problem.A visit to her doctor and Brenda was getting treatment she really didn't want.

There were good reasons why she felt lost and alone instead of enjoying the freedom of the wide open spaces and pills were not the answer. Radio was.

Radio doesn't depend on cellphone towers and since it can be set up to run on a car battery it could even work during the occasional power outage. Brenda no longer felt isolated and she thought it was wonderful.

Hand held sets were ideal for the kids when they roamed; they kept in touch through a base station installed in the house and another mobile installation in the car. After spending some time just listening to the chatter on her radio, Brenda took the plunge and soon became a part of the local CB community.

No more depression or isolation, and when her son did break his ankle, he simply called up his Mom on his handheld CB radio and she came to get him.

Radio isn't the answer to every communications problem but when you need a way to communicate which just works, without a network, without a monthly bill and without counting minutes, there really is nothing better.
