Cdl Drivers Gain A Competitive Edge With A Hazmat Endorsement Attachment

A Hazardous Materials Endorsement, usually shortened to (HazMat) is a good endorsement to have on your Commercial Drivers License

. This endorsement will qualify you to transport a wide variety of materials classified as such. A HazMat endorsement will give you a competitive edge in the marketplace.

There are many benefits of obtaining a HazMat endorsement. However, it is by far the most complex endorsement to receive. A HazMat endorsement on your CDL will give you increased employment opportunities and higher pay. You will be qualified to haul more freight. You will be a valued employee because under new Federal Regulations many CDL Drivers will not qualify for a HazMat Endorsement.

Hazardous materials are products that pose a risk to health, safety and property during transport. This includes explosives, various types of gas, solids, flammable and combustible liquid and other materials. Transporting these materials can be risky. Regulations are in place to protect the drivers, the public and the environment. Containment rules tell shippers how to package the materials safely and drivers how to load, transport and unload the material.

In order to get a HazMat endorsement on a CDL, you must pass a written test about transporting hazardous materials. To pass the test, you must know how to:

Identify what are hazardous materials.

Safely load shipments.

Properly placard your vehicle in accordance with the rules.

Safely transport shipments.

The TSA Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment program conducts a security threat assessment for any driver seeking to obtain, renew or transfer a HazMat endorsement on a state-issued Commercial Drivers License

This program was implemented to meet the requirements of the USA Patriot Act.

The USA Patriot Act changed the requirements for issuance of a new, renewal, or transfer HazMat endorsement on a Commercial Driver License (CDL).

All new and renewal HazMat endorsement applicants are required to apply for a security threat assessment. This includes checks of criminal history records, legal status and relative international databases. TSA rules require you to begin applying for the security threat assessment at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your CDL. Applicants must complete the required Hazardous Materials Endorsement Application as well as a fingerprint and background check.

Additionally, drivers must take the Hazardous Material exam every two years and complete the background check at least every five years.

To apply, you are required to have the following:

Valid CDL license number or CDL permit

Proof of legal status

Proof of identify

All HazMat CDL Drivers should know the rules and follow them. Following the rules reduces the risk of injury from hazardous materials. Don't take shortcuts as it is unsafe. Safety should be your highest priority.
