Cease grouchy, start striving to relish success
Generally, we all have our pet peeves and are ready to vent our frustration at a drop of the hat. For many of us there are several issues at the workplace that cause frustration. Sometimes it is the demanding boss who makes us groan while some other times it is the slacking co-worker who causes us to moan. The long commute or the heavy workload makes us grumble too. The crammed office interiors, non-functional AC and the bland canteen food irk us no end. Also a lot of bellyaching results from lopsided organizational policies and less than fair performance management systems. According to psychologists, whining is a coping mechanism. When there is too much stress a little bit of whining often results in alleviating the stress. Trouble starts only when you overdo the act of complaining. If you allow whining to become a major part of your daily routine it will take a heavy toll on your career and health too. When you complain you are pointing fingers at others for all your troubles. You are so engrossed in blaming others that you take no action to improve your situation. Your concentration and productivity suffer on account of your negative attitude and ultimately you will end up being a loser. Your co-workers distance themselves from you because it is tiresome to hear you complain about something or the other all the time. When you search for external sources for your problems and unhappiness you are actually stalling your own progress. You are depriving yourself the chance to learn and improve. Crucial factors for professional success include learning from failures, accepting what cannot be changed and adopting oneself to different situations. Here is what you can do to prevent yourself from becoming a habitual whiner:
Analyze your role: If you find yourself in a particularly uncomfortable situation before pointing fingers at others analyze if you are in any way responsible for your misery. If you know your role you will be in a better position to make necessary changes. Even if you are not directly responsible for a situation there may be some factors, which are in your control. Finding out these factors helps you take prudent action. Focusing on what action needs to be taken to correct a bad situation and prevent it from recurring will help you bring positive outcomes.
Try to improve the situation: When things go wrong, we blame everyone else except ourselves. Sure enough others played a part in the problems you face. But you can always come out a winner if you take the right approach to solve the problems. So stop complaining and start competing to enjoy success in your life. Learn to adapt yourself to difficult situations. You will gain a positive energy that will lead you to triumph.
Own responsibility: In the face of failure it is very convenient to shift the responsibility to someone else. You may enjoy complaining at others but you are sowing seeds for your own failure. Only when you own responsibility, you will find the root cause for failure and learn from the experience. If you are a manager you have the additional responsibility to see that there are no perpetual whiners on your team. Complaining is contagious and can dampen the spirits of the entire team. You need happy teams to make your unit productive. Discourage whining in your team by taking the following actions:
Be a role model: Walk the positive talk. Exude positive energy always. Encourage people to collectively solve problems and come out of difficult situations.
Listen to employee concerns: Let your employees air their frustrations. Do your best to remove genuine concerns. Counsel them on positive thinking if they are making mountains out of molehills.
Reward people: People who complain less and take necessary action and steps to improve a bad situation should be suitably rewarded. This will reinforce positive thinking in the team.
Seek solutions: Ask your employees to come up with solutions for every complaint they make.
Focus on the good: List the best things about your organization, the team and the work culture. Ask every team member to add to the list. This will help everyone to focus less on the bad and more on the good side of a situation. If winning is your goal let not whining find a place in your as well as your team's to do lists.
