Celebrate In Puerto Del Carmen
Puerto Del Carmen has always been a popular holiday destination but not many people
know just what this Lanzarote paradise has to offer apart from sun, sea and sand. One of the most famous events that take place in the resort is the traditional festival the 'Virgin of Carmen'. With street processions, flower displays, fireworks and regattas the festivities are ideal for anyone hoping to learn more about the diverse history and culture of the resort. If you are looking to get away this summer and are looking for much more than a typical beach break.
Although the official celebrations do not kick off until the sixteenth of July, the weeks leading up to the festivals are also full of religious celebrations and festivals. Visitors are invited to take part in a religious mass or simply stand and observe the processions where the image of the Virgin of Carmen is passed through the neighbourhoods. The image is then taken to the port area where it is placed on a boat and set out to sea followed by hundreds of other boats of fishermen and local residents. Although the procession is a colourful, vibrant affair, as the image is set out to sea it is an emotional time as people throw flowers and remember those killed at sea.
After the preliminary celebrations are over the actual festival begins with plenty of musical performances, dances, competitions and colourful regattas. Each night see's a stunning fireworks display either from the beach or from one of the embankments in the sea.
The links to the water are especially important during this festival as the Virgin of Carmen is said to be the protector of fishermen in the area. Many fishermen carry smaller images of her in their boats and often pray to her in times of trouble. As the sun sets the festival continues into the night with even more lively musical performances and street parties. Many restaurants and bars hang lights outside of their establishments to entice visitors inside where the party atmosphere continues.
The festival combines elements of traditional Puerto Del Carmen culture with fun, vibrant celebrations. Whether you are travelling with a family or are simply looking to let your hair down and join the party you are destined to find everything you dreamed of in this spectacular resort. Why wait to be disappointed with a bog-standard holiday when you can open your eyes to a fantastic display of traditional culture.
