During the holidays a segment of the population will go overboard on gift buying for family and friends

. Some do it out of guilt and others do it to make themselves feel better and still some do it to see the happiness of the recipient. Developing a strategy for holiday spending is wise if you are one of those who blow the budget and spend the rest of the year paying gifts off.

Long before the holiday arrives, sit down with a notebook and pen and write down the names of people you wish to buy a gift for. Depending on their relationship to you determine the amount of money you should spend. Remember the priority here is to be able to afford the gift that you choose for them.

If you can do this comfortably you have chosen the right gift. If not, you have chosen a gift that cost too much money and you will need to adjust your choice. If you begin this process early enough into the season it's possible you could save the money for the gifts you wish to buy. Christmas club accounts can be opened at certain banks and some employers will deduct a certain amount of money from your check if you sign up for their Holiday Savings Club.

Just as you made your list of those you wish to buy presents for you can also make your list of those that a greeting card will suffice. A beautiful card hand picked for acquaintances can express your holiday wishes for them in a heartfelt way they are sure to appreciate. Include a personal note to make it meaningful to you both. Simplicity can be the best gift!

Another plan you may want to implement is shopping year round. Choose the items you wish to give shop for them when they are on sale or better yet on clearance and purchase them as you find them. This will spread your spending over a period of time and will allow you to take advantage of the best possible price to be found.

Whatever your plan, set your goals and follow through. Holidays should be joyous and a time to honor those we love and value in our lives as they do the same for you. Taking the emphasis off of the money we spend can be a wise priority to set as you consider finances.
