. The rumors going around are that the radio waves created by cell phones can cause infertility in men and brain cancer. Are these really things to be concerned about? Is there truly a connection between cell phones and cancer, or is it just a myth?

All that can really be said about the connection between cell phones and cancer is that all studies so far are inconclusive. A very recent and comprehensive study of cell phone radiation and brain cancer, published in May of this year, found that the two most common forms of brain cancer had no connection with the prolonged use of a cell phone. Be that as it may, studies are still ongoing to settle the disputes among cell phone and non-cell phone users.

The Federal Communication Commission regulates cell phone safety in the United States along with the Food and Drug Administration. The FCC has set a standard, stating that no cell phone sold in the US can have a specific absorption rate, or SAR, of more than 1.6 watts per kilogram.

The SAR rate is one that measures how much radio wave radiation is absorbed into a cell phone user's body tissues. In San Francisco, a new law has been passed that requires cell phone distributors to post details about the amount of radiation emitted by each cell phone model they sell. The Board of Supervisors were apparently choosing to "err on the side of caution" since, as stated before, no definitive studies about cell phone radiation have been completed.
