Cellulite Reduction And Cellulite Treatments Explained By Dr Barry Lycka

Hi, this is Dr. Barry Lycka, Edmonton Cosmetic Dermatologist. Today, I'd like to discuss in a little more depth: cellulite treatment and cellulite reduction. I have already written several articles on cellulite, covering myths and misconceptions about cellulite, so you can understand it extremely well. Today I'm going to explain a little bit more about what treatments are available for cellulite, so you can understand how they actually work in cellulite reduction and helping to get rid of cellulite.

Now, many of you may have seen the show on TV called The Tyra Banks Show and Tyra Banks had a segment on it by Nivea, a cosmetic company who make a cream called Good-bye Cellulite. They had a Good-bye Cellulite challenge on that show where they showed that cellulite could go away with diet and exercise, and the magic cream that they use. They asked four women suffering with cellulite to put it to the test for four weeks and then report back on how the cellulite reduction worked for them.

Do these methods work to reduce cellulite? Well, all these things help, but only temporarily. You see, the cream that was used, and any other similar cellulite cream, induces a little bit of swelling in the skin, so the skin looks more uniform. It looks more textured. It looks better. But it doesn't get rid of the main problems that cause cellulite.

So, what else can be used?

Well, a time-honoured treatment for cellulite treatment is massage. Massage helps to get rid of some of the swelling we see in cellulite and the cellulite actually looks better. So, a very good massage, known as lymphatic massage can actually get rid of cellulite. Any massage therapist worth her salt knows what massage therapy is all about and what lymphatic massage is. So, if you talk to your massage therapist, ask them about this because it can help a little bit.

Another treatment that we have used for quite a while is something called Endermologie. Endermologie is a suction-assisted massage that's been used for a long period of time. It's made by a company called Endermologie LPG in France and it was invented a number of years ago to help with difficult skin problems. In fact, its first use was in burn scars because the burn scars got softer and subtler and worked better, so a person had less of a problem with that. But they also noticed that cellulite went away with it, so one of the main treatments it is used for now is for cellulite. Now, it works beautifully short-term, but it doesn't work long-term.

But what about other non-invasive techniques? There is a low-level energy laser called the Lapex 2000 that helps by taking out some of the fat cells. This makes the fat cells leaky and some of the free fatty acids which are found inside the fat cells actually go away. Unfortunately, it works only temporarily and a person needs maintenance for this to help keep cellulite away.

Finally, there are some laser systems and heat systems that use RF and laser energy to help get rid of fat, but the problem is, again, they only target small amounts of the problem. They don't target it all. Other options are Mesotherapy or LipoDissolve. In this, we inject some chemicals that are a by-product of lecithin and something that's a by product of bile salts to help the body absorb some of the fat in this tissue. We find this works by helping causing some fibrosis. Unfortunately, this doesn't work in everybody. There is some pain and some swelling that occurs afterwards.

So, those are the methods that we've used up until now for cellulite treatments but there is a new cellulite treatment called Cellulaze that I have written a separate article on which offers a really effective solution to cellulite.
