A Celtic tattoo design of a dragon makes for a wicked picture, but what else does it mean? In ancient times a Celtic dragon could arguably have been the most powerful symbol there was.

Celtic art often shows a dragon devouring its own tail, creating an unending knot. These knots symbolize an unending cycle, similar to many other Celtic designs, like the trinity knot.

Celtic dragons were worshiped like the gods. They were believed to bring heaven and earthly powers together, representing both power over land, and healing. They were also thought to be the guardians to heaven, the underworld, and all things living. When an area of land was thought was blessed by the body of a dragon, a sacred stone would be erected at that location.

Celtic dragons are still also regarded as creatures of incredible power and destructive capabilities. The red dragon symbol is still used today as a symbol of war on the Prince of Wales coat of arms. Celtic Dragons are also deigned to be compassionate diviners, capable of seeing into the future, and are often linked with prophecy.

One particular legend revolves involves Myrddin Wyll, the profit of the Welsh King. One night he has a vision of a red dragon pulling a white dragon into the sea. The red dragon represented Wales, while the white represented the Saxons who were invading. Like in all great legends, the prophecy came into fruition, and the Saxons were repelled.

There is plenty of culture to choose from when you use a Celtic tattoo design. Ancient monsters, intricate symbols, and a plethora of Gods can all be used to make a unique picture with a deeper meaning. This doesn't mean you should only use the lore. If you found another image, and you want to add some Celtic aspects to it, go for it. You are in charge when it comes to what you put on your body. In fact, a design which incorporates more than one culture can form a more dazzling and distinctive tattoo with a deeper message which suits you.
