Unlike the method of fanning air in an attempt to simulate the effects of wind, air conditioners funnel fresh air into and through an electric condenser that forces heat and moisture out by squeezing the molecules into a denser configuration. The resulting exhaust air is much colder and drier.

Air conditioner's capacity to not only chill but also desiccate air comes in practical use especially in hot, humid climates such as the American southeast, or many coastal areas in countries near the equator. They enable anyone to better tolerate and even enjoy these climates more.

They also make it possible to survive in very hot, arid climates such as deserts. We can now populate any of these areas that we can make electricity available, and air conditioners help keep us from suffering from over heating, heat stroke and dehydration. This application alone makes them one of the most revolutionary innovations of the last century.

Air conditioners come in various shapes and sizes. They range from small single-room units, to very large, rooftop central air conditioner systems. The word central' refers to the main unit, because it supplies multiple rooms or an entire ventilation system with conditioned air simultaneously and as evenly as possible.

These units collect hot air from various locations in the structure and run it through the giant condenser. They then push the conditioned air to every room via the ducting system. These systems are much more energy conserving than covering the same area with multiple single-size units.
