Central America Real Estate Is Not Only About Property On The Ocean
It may be that most Central American property-hunters head straight to the Pacific or Caribbean coast looking for beachfront and ocean view property. But that's not all the region has to offer. It may be true that countries like Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua have spectacular beaches, great surf and dramatic coastal landscapes, but look hard enough, and you'll find a wide variety of alluring property opportunities inland. In this article we look at some examples.
Do you fancy owning a historic colonial property in the oldest city in the Americas? Well look no further than Granada in Nicaragua. Here you'll find some beautiful examples of traditional Spanish colonial architecture with its thick adobe walls, shady interior courtyard gardens and terracotta roof tiles. The town has a well maintained historic center and lies on the edge of Lake Nicaragua, the 10 largest lake in the world. Given the beauty of the town and its close proximity to the capital city and international airport (only 40 minutes on a double lane highway), it's no wonder that the market for Granada real estate in Nicaragua is one of the most vibrant in the country.
Another place that is capturing the interest of investors and retirees alike is the hillside town of Boquete in Panama. Located in the western part of the country at an altitude of 1030m, the town offers crisp air and perfect temperatures. In recent years, as more amenities and services have arrived, Boquete has emerged as a significant second home market. The planned upgrade to the airport at David (40 minutes to the south) to allow international flights will only boost the strength of this already attractive market for real estate in Boquete.
We'd be amiss not to mention Costa Rica in our analysis of real estate markets in Central America. Admittedly the Pacific coast has received the most amount of attention in recent years, but when it comes to the expatriate population living in Costa Rica full time, the Central Valley area around San Jose is perhaps the most significant location. All the amenities, services and infrastructure one would expect from a mature second home and retirement location are present here. Costa Rica has been on the tourism map for decades and has the largest population of US expatriates in the region. And not all of them are living on the ocean.
So if you're interested in purchasing real estate in Central America or are considering the region as a retirement choice, make sure you don't spend all of your time on the ocean but leave space in your agenda to consider your options inland.
