The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) - an autonomous organization

of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India has been busy developing independent scientific research into various fundamental and applied aspects of Unani Medicine since January 1979. During the 30 years of its functioning, the CCRUM has emerged into a leading institution of Unani medical research in the world. At present more than 25 centres are functioning under the Council in different parts of the country. And in the last few years some of these centers have earned worldwide fame for their leads in the fields of clinical research, drugn standardization, survey and cultivation of medicinal plants, and literary research.

Under its clinical research programmed, the Council has carried out both drug and disease based trials, and come out with safe and successful Unani treatment for some common and chronic diseases. These diseases include Bars (Vitiligo), Humma-e-ljamia (Malaria), Daul Feel (Filaria), Iltehad-e-Kabid (Infective Hepatitis), Wajaul Mafasil (Rheumatoid Arthritis), Zeequan Nafas (Bronchial Asthma), Ishal-e-Atfal (Infantile Diarrhoea), Sailanur Rahem (Leucorrhoea) and Kasrate-e-Shahmuddam (Hyperlipidemia). Having tested some 55 Unani drugs in 18 common disorders, the Council has published the results of morethan 15 studies. Recently, the Council has also applied for patents on seven Unani drugs it has developed, two of them being for Rheumatoid Arthritis, two for Bronchial Asthma, two for Hepatitis and one for Malaria. The Council is also attempting to scientifically establish the theory of humors and temperaments so fundamental to Unani Medicine, besides testing the usefulness of regimental therapies like Hajamat (Cupping). The Council has also developed a kit of more than 30 Unani medicines for common/seasonal ailments.

Quality control and standardization of both single and compound Unani drugs is one area in which the Council has done some quality work that is a new record in the 2500 year history of the system. So far, the Council has standardized more than 222 single and 385 compound drugs. Of these, standards for 122 single and 192 compound drugs have been approved by the Unani Pharamacopoeia Committee for inclusion in the official Unani Pharmacopoeia of India. The CCRUM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to collaborate through its various laboratories to develop viable bio-active molecules and to establish standardization procedures and improved processing and preserving techniques applicable to Unani Medicine industries for single and compound drugs for global competition. The Council has signed another MoU with National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), New Delhi for patenting and commercial exploitation of Unani drugs developed by the Council.

Another important area in which the Council has done some valuable work is the survey and cultivation of medicinal plants. Under this programme, the Council's researchers have explored different forest zones in different States including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. During these surveys, morethan 54,000 plant specimens and 6,650 folk medicinal claims have been collected from tribal communities.


In the literary research programme, the Council has so far edited and translated from Araic and Persian classical of Unani Medicine into Urdu and published them. The Council has so far organized may National Seminars, Workshops and Internation Seminar on Unani Medicine. The Council's researchers have produced more than 1500 research papers.
