Certified Loose Diamonds Gia Grading Guide

Each loose diamond you come across from a reputable retailer will have certification

, whether from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the American Gem Society (AGS). Knowing the process through which the GIA certifies its diamonds will add further insight to your next diamond purchase.

Before delving into how the GIA grades its diamonds, it helps to know what a diamond certification entails. A certification is essentially a blueprint that details every aspect of the loose diamonds GIA specifically, from its carat, cut and overall quality ratings.

There are many other different diamond certification boards, yet there is no guarantee that the diamonds graded by these boards will be of high quality; those certification boards are less reputable and may be more lenient in their grading than GIA and AGS.

By examining certificates form AGS and particularly GIA, you can ensure that the certified loose diamonds you are about to purchase are of high quality.

There are also diamond appraisals, and one should be careful not to confuse an appraisal with a certification. An appraisal places a monetary value of the gem, but does not certify it of its overall quality. Alternately, a certificate does not put a monetary value of the stone, but affirms and details the diamonds overall qualities.

The GIA places anonymity of the diamonds at high importance, as to eliminate any bias upon grading the diamond. The diamonds arrive at the GIA laboratories in packages marked only with a unique barcode. The GIA will ask diamond manufacturers to leave out any name from the package before submitting to the laboratories.

To determine carat weight, GIA experts weigh the diamonds on a sensitive micro-balance. The GIA also has an optical measuring device that measures angles of facets within the diamond, as well as proportions and overall measurements.

The GIA has its own color graders to determine the quality of color in diamonds. Color graders use a standardized viewing environment that allows for objectivity between different graders. When enough color graders reach a sort of consensus of opinion on the color quality, the diamond goes to the next stage.

To measure clarity, the diamond is viewed under intense magnification. Here, the diamond is evaluated for overall finish and clarity. Any flaws in the diamond are spotted at this stage. A second clarity grader goes through the same intensive test as the first to further verify its quality. If there is a difference of opinion, further grading measures are enacted.

The GIA will then examine the cut of the diamond only for round brilliant diamonds of a specific color range. The cut grade is determined by all the previous measurements and evaluations performed. Proportions, symmetry, surface, brilliance, durability and weight descriptions provided are all factors that determine the final cut grade.

Knowing the GIA process of grading diamonds will further inform your purchase. Before purchasing a diamond, it is wise to ask the retailer to see the GIA certificate; otherwise, youll be going on the retailers word alone.
