Certified Nursing Assistant - Is It Worth The Training
In early days of nursing profession, there were many duties performed by one nurse and this sometimes reduced the work efficiency, so in order to reduce the work load of nurses, the work was divided amongst some types of nurses and the medical assistants. This proved to be very effective so this was continued and now we have different types of nurses with different responsibilities. The first step in the profession of nursing is the certified nursing assistant also known as CNA. These nurses are the frontline nurses who work under the supervision of registered nurses. It is their prime duty to keep a close eye on patient's condition and observe whether it is improving or getting worse. It is the duty of a CNA to check and keep the record of patient's blood pressure, body temperature, blood sugar, purse rate and other vital signs. They also have to take care of patient's hygiene and they wash patient's hands very often and also give them bed bath, if required. They also help patient with bed pan and feeding themselves. A CNA is required to help the patient to build his physical as well as mental strength so a CNA is taught to only help the patient to the necessary extend, and not more than that, for example if a patient cannot make his food but can eat himself then the CNA should only prepare food for him and make the patient eat himself. It is not very difficult to become a nursing assistant and get certified, although the job does not require a certification but the employers always prefer the certified people over non certified people so it is better to get certified by the state's board of nursing. There are many CNA schools around the country and you can choose any of them to start your training but before taking admission in CNA schools, you should first check that the school you have chosen is recognized by the state's board of nursing. The admission in CNA schools does not require any strong academic history, although some well reputed organizations demand a high school degree. CNA certification and training is not very difficult and can be completed in less than 3 moths. A standard CNA have 11 modules having some basic knowledge about the field and they also arrange some practical training for you. After getting your training, you are required to pass an exam for getting the certification. This exam is divided in two parts, the first part is based on the theoretical knowledge and you will get 50 MCQs to answer while the second part will deal with your practical skills, for this part of exam you will be taken to a ward and asked to deal with certain situations. After passing your exam, you will become a certified nursing assistant and you can start earning by working in hospitals, private clinics or a nursing home. A certified nursing assistant can easily get a job in hospitals, private clinics, and nursing homes and sometimes they get hired for the patients at home. A nursing assistant works for 40 hours every week in different shifts which are morning, evening and night shifts.
