Chainsaws Require Caution And Maintenance

Proper maintenance will keep a saw running for a long time

. These powerful tools require a certain amount of skill for proper use. Occasional users should take time to become very familiar with their chainsaws before putting them to work.

Chain

One should flip the bar every time the chain gets sharpened. The chain must be kept sharp so the machine does not have to work harder than necessary. Certain saw files match the different sizes of saws available. Too big of a file will eat into the chain itself and endanger the user with a chain that breaks easily. Too small of file will not keep the chisel edge of the chain teeth fully sharp. To sharpen the saw, one should sharpen all the teeth on one side and then the other. To make sure all the teeth are equally sharp. One might count 12 strokes on each one. Some users have found an advantage to adding coarse grinding compound to their saw file. When finished, the user can tighten the chain with the setscrew while lifting up on the end of the bar to keep it tight. Once the chain has tightened, one can tighten the nuts on the side of the saw. A tight chain keeps a saw from working too hard.

Maintenance

A few other items need occasional attention. One should change the spark plug every season. A saw needs a certain mixture of oil and gas, nothing more, nothing less. One should also properly clean the air filter on a regular basis. Scraping off the filter or blowing it out with an air compressor are both damaging to a quality filter. One should wash a filter in warm water and regular dish detergent. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry. Additionally, a chainsaw user should look inside the fuel tank occasionally to be sure sediment has not collected.

Operation

One needs to be careful when using a chainsaw. An occasional user should avoid unsure footing, including snow and ice, when running the saw. The tip of the bar can catch on branches or logs and jump up into the user's face. While chainsaw operators want someone with them in the woods in case an accident occurs, no helpers should ever work within three feet of a running saw and should stay much further away when trees are falling. Cautious, informed users can make good use of chainsaws.
