Change User Password of a remote Windows system
Sometimes you may need to change Windows User Account password that is on any Windows computer from any other Windows computer regardless of whether the User Account is on a workstation, a stand-alone server, or a Windows domain controller. There are two ways to change user password of a remote Windows system: - either through Command Prompt or through User interface.
Use Command Prompt to change user password if you need to change a password on an account for which you have forgotten the original one as going through the User interface requires confirmation of the old password. You should have administrator access to change user password from Command Prompt. If you do not have administrator access, and you attempt to change the User password, you will receive a System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied error message.
To open Command Prompt, do one of the following:
Go to Start>> Programs or all programs>> Accessories>>Command Prompt.
Simultaneously press the windows key and the letter r on the keyboard. Type cmd in the prompt and hit Enter.
You will see a black screen
Type net useron the command line.It will show you a detailed little chart of all the User Accounts on the computer.
Select the account for which you have to change the password.
Now type net user user_name * /domain. You will be prompted to enter a password, then again to confirm it. Type a new password and the password will be changed.
Or
You can type the following command:
net user user_name new_password
Doing so changes the password without prompting you again. This command will also enable you to change passwords in a batch file.
To change the user password from the user interface, follow the steps given below:
Log on to your System, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Windows Security dialog box.
Press the Change Password button.
Enter the User name whose password you have to change.
In the From dialog box, either click the computer name or domain name in the drop-down list box, or type the computer name or domain name that contains the User Account Database where the user name exists.
Now type the appropriate password in the Old Password, New Password, and Confirm New Password box.
You will get a message indicating Your password has been changed.
You can use this method even if the User Right "Access this computer from network" is disabled for the group Everyone.
