Changes Are Overdue In Our "throwaway Society"
Just about all of us know that our environment is in a very precarious situation
. Our climate is changing, our polar ice caps are melting, and our weather patterns are in disarray.
One of the major threats to our planet is the huge amount of waste material that we regularly discard into our water, air and ground every day throughout the year. In the US and abroad there are virtually countless locations that are being polluted by garbage, radioactive waste and toxic chemicals.
Over the past couple of centuries people have been asking, "where we can put the waste that we produce?"
We've answered by dumping our garbage into the oceans and that has caused almost irreparable harm. We've attempted to inject it into the earth into underground wells. That has not worked either.
We've tried to incinerate our garbage. Yes, it does get rid of it. But it also produces toxic ash and pollutes the air.
Landfills were once thought to be the answer, but they all eventually will leak.
Recycling seems to be the answer, but even that option focuses on waste.
Perhaps asking, "Where can we put our waste?" And answering with, "We need to put it somewhere" is the wrong question to ask because the reality is we cannot actually get rid of waste.
Instead, maybe we should begin to ask why we have to produce such a large amount of waste in the first place. We should ask why is planned obsolescence such a major part of product development? And why, in heaven's name, do we need all of these products that bring toxins into our lives?
Perhaps we should demand that industries change the way that they manufacture things so that what is produced is designed to last longer. The longer it lasts the less waste will be produced.
When you begin to think about things with this perspective you're no longer trying to figure out what to do with the waste, you're getting to the core of the problem by thinking about how to reduce waste and reduce pollution.
For example, have you ever noticed how excessively well wrapped the things we buy are? Why do the things we purchase need to be wrapped so well, other than to make them look pretty?
And why shouldn't the companies that sell batteries, cleaning fluids, and pesticides either be responsible for taking them back to recycle them? Or maybe they should just remove all of the toxins to begin with. These are much better alternatives than our throwing these toxic substances into a landfill.
We need alternatives to throwing away many of the things that have made our lives easier and better.
Environmental consultants are intimately involved in the process of finding and cleaning up hazardous situations that were caused by throwing our waste away.
