Changing a Web Hosting Provider - What You Need to Do
With problems such as poor technical support, website downtime or too much spam
, you decide that you need to change to a new hosting provider. Naturally, the next step is to transfer your website from the current provider to a new web host. However, you may be lost in doing so. In this article, we will talk about how to migrate a website to a new provider.
For the transfer of a website, proper planning needs to be done to ensure a smooth migration.
Subscribe for a new web hosting service
First of all, you need to get your hosting plan with the new provider. Please ensure that the hosting account is active before proceeding.
Doing a files backup
As soon as you get your new web hosting account, you should backup all your files in the old provider and download it to your PC. If your website includes a MySQL database, you can go to phpmyadmin and export the database as a sql file.
Uploading the backup
When you sign up for web hosting, the provider will send you a notification email with the FTP information such as username and password. With the help of FTP, you can transfer all the files from your PC to the new server. If your website includes a MySQL database, please restore the database using phpmyadmin
Testing the new account
The new website can be tested using the IP the provider has given you. You need to check if the scripts using CGI or php does work as per requirements. In addition, you need to verify if the hyperlinks are working. When you have fully test that the account is working, the next step is to contact the new domain registrar to update the domain 's name server to point the new DNS of the web hosting provider.
Updating the DNS
The purpose of the domain name servers is to control how the domain name resolve. Usually the nameservers are in the following format.
ns1.oryon.net
ns2.oryon.net
The DNS record change takes time to propagate through all the WHOIS servers. This is typically 24 to 72 hours, although it can be less than 1 hour depending on the registrar. When the transfer is done, all the changes made to the new hosting server will be reflected in your browser immediately. You should repeat all the tests to ensure the new site is fully functional. Thereafter you can go ahead to terminate your old web hosting account.
