Chapter 4: Therese Finds Me

First Communion was a memorable day with tension over keeping the fast and remembering not to take a drink, but I managed it all and found myself making a special place for jesus in my heart. My parents gave me my birthstone, a yellow sapphire in a ring setting as my special gift. I rememer looking at it as I folded my hands together in prayer. Now years later, knowing the unique energies found in stones, I can picture that beautiful gift as still sending me its powerful energyfrom whereever it may be.

As I continued my classes in religion, I was especially drawn to the stories of the saints. I had a set of four little books with pictures and stories. It was within these books that I found my beloved St. Therese, the Little Flower. I was enamored with her promise to shower roses from heaven and to spend her heaven doing good on earth. She would indeed be my confirmation patron. And so in the fourth grade I became Patricia Ann Therese. I was given a "nun" doll and when she lost her shoes, I called her my discalced Carmelite.

Years later in the novitiate, when I read a more detailed story of her life, I was delighted to find that we had much in common: both were "spoiled" with great attention from family members, both were extremely sensitive and even a bit neuotic. We both entered relgious life early, I at seventeen and she at fifteen. She had a dog and two turtle doves and during my life I have had ten birds and two dogs, Boots as a child and Heidi during my religious life. Finally both of us were Joan of Arc in a play in the novitiate. Indeed she has been my companiion on life's journey as well as model and inspiration.

In later years when I was researching Esoteric Astrology, I had a joint birth chart made of Therese Martin and myself, using our birthdate, times and places, The following interesting quote is from the results:

"You are likely to be generous and benevolent toward one another and to be highly tolerant of each other's faults and shortcomings. You are probably in tune philosophically and intellectually and can help each other to expand your horizons in interesting ways."

Indeed St. Therese has done just that for me and continues to guide and inspire me daily. But more about her later.
