Chapter 8: My Little Brother

My birth had been a difficult one, as I was born with a rupture and subsequently caught pneumonia and whooping cough. My mother had prayed much for my life and had consecrated me in a special way to God. Thus after my recovery, my mother was not able to have any more children. Several times during my youth, my parents had considered adopting a child and had actually applied at the Toledo,Orphanage. It seemed that all they had were foster children. Finallly when I was in high school, our parish priest, Father O'Toole, told us of St. Ann's orphanage in Canada and we applied. During the time we were being investigated and approved, we prayed especially to St. Joseph whose shrine we had erected in our back yard. It turned out that the name of the orphanage was St. Joseph's Oratory run by a group of French sisters.

Mom and Dad were to make an initial trip to choose between two little boys. Dad was concerned as to how he would ever choose one and not the other. Upon arriving, they were presented with two small boys under the age of two. One of them clung to the sister crying while the other one approached my father with open arms. The decision was self-evident. His name was Joseph. It turned out that he was a child who had been born out of wedlock at the orhanage and never experienced another home. He understood only French.

I was able to go with Mom and Dad to pick him up. It was a long five hundred mile trip and he was car sick on the way home. During the next year, the biological mother could reclaim him at anytime, since she had been informed of the adoption. I took French in school and prayed hard that we never heard from her. My prayers were answered and one year later the adoption was complete. At the age of fifteen, I finally had become a big sister. We loved him dearly and with my expert teaching skills, he soon learned to speak English. I remember his first sentence was , " Where did you put the ball?" I guess you could say it was my first ESL class.

Our relationship was always special. Dad was very proud when people would say that he even looked like him. We all felt that his presence in our family was always meant to be. He was a blessings from God.
