1) A Good Night's Sleep. A new puppy knows how to get your attention at 2am. Puppies will certainly miss their siblings and a stuffed animal or squeaky toy is not a substitute for their brothers and sisters in the middle of the night. Do you enjoy sleeping during the night? So does an older dog.
2) Puppies are not housebroken! Puppies have not yet learned the difference between the green grass outside and the rug under your coffee table. Puppies have no self-control and will eliminate when they feel the urge. Adult dogs have impulse control and often become embarrassed if they have indoor accident. Do you really want to explain that yellow stain on your white rug?
3) What You See Is What You Get. Puppies are fun, cute and adorable. But what will his personality be a year or two from now? What will his temperament be as an adult dog? With older dogs you know what you are getting. Your questions are easily and quickly handled by spending time with the older dog at the rescue and questioning the staff who have been caring for him.
4) Instant Companion. When you adopt an older dog, you have an animal that can go with you to the lake, park or neighbors now. You do not have to wait for the puppy to grow up. You have more freedom in your personal life with an older dog.
5) You like your clothes. A natural part of the puppy growing process is teething and mouthing your favorite items. Most puppies grow out of this phase in 12-18 months, but, you really need to ask yourself how important your things are to you. An older dog has grown through the chewing phase and could care less about your remote control.
Adopting an older dog will not only impact your life and family, it will change the life of a dog that has not had an easy path to follow. Whatever reason the older dog ended up in a rescuebe assured they are ready to shower love and devotion on the one who rescued them. But you may end up asking yourself who rescued who?
