Charm Beads and Amulets Linked to Magic in the Greco-Roman World

The belief in magic was widespread during Greco-Roman times. The use of charms or spells used as an attempt to control the surrounding environment or one's self was commonplace during this era. Although looked down upon by various religions, the ancient practice of magic does reflect certain aspects of religious traditions. Charm beads, amulets and talismans were often used in a number of religious practices.

The use of amulets in ancient Roman society is linked to the use of magic in the Greco-Roman World. In fact, the influence of magic from this time has resulted in the use of such charms in countless cultures.

In Greco-Roman times, gemstones were worn by individuals interested in attaining powers associated with the gods of the time. For instance, amethyst was worn in order to imbue the wearer with the powers of the god Bacchus, milky chalcedony represented the god Jupiter, green jasper the god Ceres, and heliotrope the god Sol.

Other charm beads from this era bore inscriptions to ward off evil spirits or to bring good luck. For example, a common inscription from this time was VTEREFELIX or UTERE FELIX, which meant "good luck to the user."

Similar amulets were given to children in order to protect them from harm, whether earthly or supernatural. The symbols used for such protection included ravens, dogs, a hand with an open palm, an eye pierced with an arrow, and many other symbolic icons.

Many of the symbols from the Greco-Roman times or that were inspired from this era have survived to this day in one form or another. They hold a popular place in modern culture, from books to movies, most popularly in the tremendously popular Harry Potter series in which symbols from Greco-Roman and Egyptian times play a large part in the story.

Modern-day charm beads often make use of symbols from ancient cultures. Many of these amulets resonate with the collective unconscious as they give meaning and ideas to our contemporary lives. This is why wearers of jewelry embellished with such talismans or amulets have remained steadily popular throughout the ages.

The practice of wearing decorative pendants, bracelets or other jewelry for good luck or other such beliefs is likely to have begun well before Greco-Roman times, although that particular era widely demonstrates the phenomenon. Throughout most cultures and time, there are many examples of such jewelry.
