A lavish and magnificent landmark that harks back to the glory days when India was ruled by Kings, Charminar is the most famous monument and mosque in all of Hyderabad. The name Charminar literally translates to Four Towers and Mosque of the Four Minarets which exemplifies the form of the mosques structure as four towers ascend to the heavens off the main body. These were apparently created to represent the first four caliphs of Islam respectively. The stories regarding Charminars creation are varied though all agree that it was constructed under the orders of Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah who was the ruler of the city at the time. In one tale the city was besieged by a plague, and the Sultan prayed for an end to the suffering. Upon the eradication of the plague, he ordered a mosque to be created on the very spot he chose for prayer. Others indicate that it was dedicated to his wife while another story claims it was built to mark the intersection of the four major roads of the city. Of course all of the stories could be true as they do not necessarily contradict each other. Regardless of the exact purpose behind its creation, no one can deny that Charminar serves as an import religious site in the region. The mosque is located at the very heart of the city and is a strong indicator of Hyderabads prosperity over the ages as the surrounding city sprang up around this important monument. It is for this reason that Charminar is easily the most popular tourist attraction in Hyderabad and is symbolic of the entire city. The monument enjoys an importance that could be likened to the Statue of Libertys relationship with New York City. The mosque is created from lime, granite and mortar is an unusual hybrid of arc and mosque fused together harmoniously. Charminar is quite an impressive sight amidst the skyline of Hyderabad and is even more so when seen at night under illumination.
