Charming Luscious Aranjuez

Aranjuez is beautiful because it is green everywhere; it may be dusty and dry around central Spain but Aranjuez offers luxuriant palaces and green luscious gardens. This town is a popular weekend getaway from Madrid or Toledo in the summer.

Attractions

Its 18th century palace, the Palacio Real with its green gardens, was created by the Bourbon monarchs of Spain to recreate the city of Versailles. This palace fascinates visitors more with its ornate furnishings on the inside than with the outside architectural structure. Hundreds of rooms are exotically and elaborately furnished.

Further away on an artificial island in the Tagus river, one can find the Jardin de la Isla fountains with the more attractive Jardn del Prncipe opposite the main road, offering shaded walks and siesta spots along the river.

At the far end you will find the castle Labrador which offers visits via special arrangement. It is structured in all kinds of styles which has made it something of a "white elephant" monument, for it has an overload of silk, gold, marble, crystal and fancy clocks.

In its garden lies a small castle which is basically a museum housing bright colored transports to take the royalty across the river.

Getting around

Public bus services are available to these sites although all are within walking distance. There is a splendid 18th century plaza in the town called Plaza de Toros with the recently opened exhibition area housing a museum of local history, royal heritage, swords and taurine paraphernalia and memorabilia.

Places to stay

Accommodation can be found at hostels in the town centre or the campsite that offers a pool and bikes and boats for hire. There is a high quality hotel here, which offers modern-style design, set directly across from the Royal Palace in the middle of this historical town. This hotel was originally built specifically for King Carlos IV with its charming reception area full of original features while other areas are cleanly decorated in contemporary style.

There is also the new and modern Barcelo Aranjuez which is luxurious with its contemporary design and excellent amenities located 47 km on the south side of Madrid. This hotel boasts a golf course with 18 holes, a fully equipped fitness center and a splendid casino.

Great tastes

Fresh produce is abundant here with its seasonal asparagus and famed strawberries. You can either purchase your own picnic selection or enjoy a delectable meal at the restaurant Casa Jos, which offers up-market priced cuisine.

An interesting place to eat would be the riverside restaurant of La Rana Verde which goes as far back as the 19th century and offers a great selection of food choices to delight your taste buds.
