Cheap And Free Things To Do In Copenhagen

Impressively varied Copenhagen is famed for its high standard of living

. With numerous districts packed full of alluring architecture, cultural attractions and bustling street life, it's unsurprising that the city is considered something of an undiscovered European gem by its inhabitants and visitors alike.

It's also unsurprising that prices in Copenhagen are sky-high - a fact that can make visiting the city a worrying prospect for the budget-minded backpacker. Fear not, however, for there are many cheap and free things to do in Copenhagen. As long as you plan accordingly, exploring this wonderful city on a limited budget is more than possible.

Stay in a Hostel

Booking a Copenhagen hostel proves a great way to cut down on accommodation expenses. Hostels are almost always cheaper than hotels, and they often make for a more enjoyable stay too. After all, what better way is there to experience a city than alongside likeminded backpackers?

Danhostel Copenhagen City is a great example of a hostel in Copenhagen. It's extremely affordable, friendly, and exceptionally well situated (on the edge of the Vesterbro, Copenhagen's young and hip quarter). Plenty of other places prove equally advantageous for the budget traveler arriving in the city.

Take a Bike (Literally)

Copenhagen's excellent CityBikes scheme makes traveling around the city both enjoyable and completely free. The instantly recognizable blue bikes are dotted around the city; all you need to do is leave a single coin as a deposit. After that, the bike is yours until the end of the day, when you return it to any CityBikes drop-off point and collect your deposit. This is definitely one to take advantage of!

Visit the Museums

Copenhagen is renowned for its artistic output and historical heritage, which makes museum going in the city a sheer delight. Fortunately, access to many of the big museums (such as the National Museum and Statens Museum of Kunst) is completely free to the general public.

Copenhagen also boasts many small, contemporary, and very definitely cool galleries. Most of these waive their normal entrance fee on Wednesdays, making it by far the best day to do a spot of art gazing!

Explore Christiania

Once upon a time, Christiania was world famous; a 'freetown' at the forefront of the 70's hippy movement, people flocked here to join in the peace-and-love movement (while, of course, smoking a prodigious amount of hash).

Today, the township has come back under the rule of the Danish Government to some extent, although it notionally maintains its 'freetown' status. Whatever the case, this remains a fascinating living museum. Gaze at the homemade houses and the prevalent urban art, and try to figure out just how Christiania is governed today. It's a compelling mystery to most!

Take it Easy in the Tivoli Gardens

The Tivoli Gardens are Copenhagen's urban lung, featuring acres of wonderfully tranquil and well-cultivated greenery. If sitting around watching the world go by isn't your thing, then the park also offers Europe's largest Aquarium, the World's tallest carousel, and an awesome wooden rollercoaster. All in all not bad for a city park!
