You are an employer and you need an employee. Not just any employee, a great employee; and with business steadily picking up, you are just not sure you can spare the time and resources internally to secure a successful recruit. Wait! Across the lunch room you see a newspaper ad for a cheap recruitment service. You're tempted by the service's benefit to your budget, but you wonder, are their low costs really worth it?

Recruitment agencies may offer low rates for valid reasons. New recruitment firms are entering a global marketplace where competition is steep and the choices are endless. Newcomers on the scene need a hook. They need something that will make job seekers or hiring managers choose them over the others.

An unbeatable price is a persuasive tool that draws attention and changes minds, and it's a good way for start ups to grow their business. A low cost doesn't necessarily mean low success then, but even if it just means new, do you really trust a baby in the market to bring you a Star Performer?

Low cost can definitely mean low skill. Are these recruiters professional, or a group of friends with a get rich quick scheme? Are they new to town? Do they understand the market you operate in? Anyone can talk a good talk and low ball the competition, but can they deliver? If you are going to outsource your recruitment efforts, you want to get the most bang for you buck, but you need a professional who can facilitate a hire that will add to your company's strategic advantage.

Sometimes the cheapest is definitely not the best. You are saving money, but you have to wonder if you are sacrificing something in return. Are the rates low because this firm is not performing well? Because they have been loosing clientele? And if so, why? A poor performing recruitment firm is definitely not worth their low cost.

Cheap recruitment agencies may be cheap because they operate with a small overhead. From a business perspective, this is smart cost control. From a human resource point of view, this may mean that the employees of this business are underpaid. Heavy workload, low pay and lack of resources that recruitment agencies with larger overheads would have are not the magic ingredients for a successful workforce. This picture does not normally include an engaged workforce.

Is it worth the low cost to outsource the responsibility of finding your star to an unhappy recruiter? Definitely not! Displeased or disgruntled, this recruiter like any unmotivated employee is not going to go above and beyond to provide you with quality service that exceeds your highest expectations!

But a cheap recruitment service is great for you if you don't need someone like a vice-president or skilled manager. Their low costs are worth it if the position you're filling isn't extremely specialized.
