Cheap Van Insurance - Why It's Important
In the UK, the law requires all vehicles to be insured before they are allowed on the roads
, and commercial vehicles are no exception to the rule. Of course if you do run a business, your van probably plays an important part, so irrespective of what the law says, insuring your van is just plain common sense.
Because it costs more to insure commercial vehicles, some people try to get around it by insuring their van as a private vehicle. Others on the other hand believe that because they use their vans as private vehicles, and rarely for business purposes, they don't really require commercial insurance.
Unfortunately however, even if you only use the van once or twice a week for business, it then becomes a commercial vehicle. Even so, it is still possible to find cheap van insurance, although admittedly, it may take a little effort on your part.
As a business owner, your main concern is probably all about profit, so of course you'll want to find cheap van insurance, but before you get too obsessed with prices, you also need to think about quality. After all, it would be pointless having an insurance policy which provides practically no cover at all, no matter how cheap it is.
Of course it also wouldn't make sense to take out more insurance that what you actually require, hence the reason why you need to consider just how much cover you require, based on the type of business you run. For example, if you rarely carry valuable items in your van, then you won't be too concerned about its contents being stolen. If you never carry any passengers, then of course you only have yourself to worry about. Also, if the van, with all due respect, is an old banger, then why bother insuring it to the max?
The cost of insurance won't only depend on the type of business you run, but instead, it will also depend on things such as the age of the driver or drivers. Where the vehicle is kept when not in use will also influence the cost of cover. Just having an alarm fitted can see you qualifying for reduced rates, and of course there are other steps you can take as well in order to have those rates reduced even further.
The main thing to keep in mind though, is that you should never be tempted to drive a commercial vehicle if it's not insured as such. If you're ever involved in an accident, the police will be there to write up a report, and if they suspect the van was being used for business purposes, or that it's probably used for business in general, they will mention it in their report.
Obviously when you submit that report to your insurance company, together with your claim, they'll have the perfect excuse to turn you away, in that you provided them with false information when you took out the policy originally.
Even if your van was a private vehicle before, but you're using it for your business now, then you need to let your insurance company know as soon as possible. Remember, you'll still be able find cheap van insurance, even if you're using your van for business.
