Check Out The Motorola Backflip's Unique Qwerty Keyboard!

The design team at Motorola have been thinking out of the box lately with new form factors

, this is proved with there latest Android Smartphone, the Motorola Backflip; its unique design feature is the flip out full QWERTY keyboard with a touch pad on the underside. It runs the Android 1.5 operating system and benefits from the MotoBlur overlay which includes a range of social network integrations. There is modest 3.1 inch HVGA touch screen on the front and the back houses the 5 mega pixel digital camera.

When closed the Backflip performs as regular Smartphones would; it has a capacitive touch screen which is very receptive and comes equipped with a built-in accelerometer, but once the flip out keyboard is revealed the phone moves into landscape mode and becomes a real messaging marvel, with e-mail integration, supporting Windows Live and Yahoo, and social networking applications the Backflip offers communications options in abundance. There is a very clever BackTrack track pad on the underside of the keyboard which is used for fingertip navigation when in messaging mode; this is both responsive and perceptive, as it works well with the shape of the hand when typing messages. MotoBlur has within its package the Happenings home screen, widgets are supplied for Updates and Messaging, there is a regular stream of Facebook, Twitter and MySpace updates and the Messaging widget is home to your Ultimate inbox; Facebook messages, direct Twitter posts, SMS and e-mails, they are all gathered for a complete overview.

The Backflip (as you can imagine being an Android Smartphone) supports both Wi Fi and 3G data network connections which both offer a speedy and smooth internet connection delivering download speeds up to 7.2Mbps. The Android browser interface performs fast and well and renders pages without blemish, with the lack of the pinch to zoom and double tap, Motorola have given the Backflip zoom in and zoom out buttons accompanied by a magnifying glass icon, these features are easy to get used to and combine well when you find yourself needing to read smaller text. The browser functions well both in vertical and horizontal modes, when in horizontal mode the BackTrack track pad comes in quite useful for page navigation though it doesnt support kinetic scrolling or a mouse cursor and although there is no Flash support the YouTube integration helps cover for its short comings.

The Motorola Backflip comes with the QuickOffice application; this includes a document viewer which is compatible with Windows Word, Excel and PowerPoint, so the business conscious have been considered, as for entertainment, the Media player offers reasonable performance and functionality when delivering both audio and video playback, there is Bluetooth connectivity for device-to-device data transfer and there is plenty of storage space via the MicroSD slot. The 5 mega digital camera is capable of day-to-day image and video capture, it comes complete with auto-focus, geo-tagging and LED flash for improved image quality and the interface is on par with other handsets of similar spec.

With additional applications available from the Android Market along with other options there is plenty of opportunity for personalization and the mixture of its eccentric and brave design with its Android features will give the device some extra push when it hits the shelves.
