Cheerleading in College & Competitive Cheerleading Scholarships

Cheerleading has been around college campuses since the very beginning

. Since the 1880s, students have enjoyed cheering their team on in a unified manner. Cheerleading has moved from the male dominated megaphone days, to the exclusive female in the short skirt, to present day, co-ed team inspired activity. Of course the cheerleading program is filled with gravity-defying stunts, short skirts, and lots of school spirit.

Some Universities such as the University of Maryland provide competitive cheerleading scholarships. Since Title IX has been introduced, cheerleading scholarships have been added to the qualified scholarships available to give female athletes.

Primarily, most colleges have some type of cheerleading program at their university. Sometimes it is based on student body votes and sometimes it is strictly on athletic ability. At Texas A&M University they are called yell leaders. The yell leaders are dressed in white and they lead the student body in yells. They don't flip or get tossed in the air. They are elected by popular vote from the student body. At Florida Southern University Moccasin Cheerleaders are a co-ed squad that cheers at FSC men's and women's basketball home games and select away games. The squad also cheers at various school functions. Squad members must maintain a 2.50 GPA to be eligible.

It's been said that Ronald Reagan attended Eureka College, a small school in Illinois, for the extracurricular education rather than the academics. In his autobiography, he admits that he kept his grades barely above average just to maintain his eligibility for football, swimming and cheerleading. Good thing he did, since without a decent education, he would never have had the chance to participate in the activities that brought out the best

in him.

Today's cheerleading can be quiet strenuous on the athletes body. With its emphasis on stunting and gymnastics, cheerleading today is also a disciplined, demanding, and exciting sport in its own right. And it's big business, attracting thousands of girls and women across the United States. Competitions, schools, and summer camps flourish, and top cheerleaders can win athletic scholarships and earn good pay as coaches and instructors.

Cheerleading in college can be quite rewarding allowing the cheerleader to go to many places they would never have had the chance to experience. It lets them develop some motivational and leadership skills essential in today's society.

Cheerleading in college has come a long way, and will continue to be around for many years to come. As long as there are teams that need encouraging and fans that need motivating, there will always be college cheerleaders.
