After the explosion of the celebrity chef, cooking is an increasingly popular past time and becoming a chef is a very much sought after profession. So, if you want to be a chef here are several things that you may want to consider before you start to apply for courses and apprenticeships.

To be a chef you have to understand and accept several things:

Hours are unsociable.

You have to work very hard.

When you start at the bottom of the heap you will have to wash up, peel potatoes and chop onions to learn and show you are willing before you start to climb the career ladder.

You will have to study, as well as show that you are capable practically.

It is a creative job; eventually you will have to present dishes artistically and devise interesting menus.

You will have had to show an interest in cooking whilst at school, so taking a food science course is recommended.

To start you don't get paid very much money.

You should research the profession thoroughly.

You may have to pay for your tuition.

You apprenticeship could take two or three years.

You will eventually have to buy the tools of your trade chef whites, knives, appropriate footwear etc.

When you have researched all of this, and you still come to the conclusion that you would like to be a chef then there are several routes that you can take into the profession.

Catering College Catering College is when you learn the skill at college and may be let out to complete some work experience in a place of work, to prepare you for your first job. It is the traditional way of learning and one that you will be used to after completing school. You will need show a good school record to be accepted. Learning culinary skills at college can be free, but some exclusive private colleges charge a fee.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are basically when you learn on the job and may have a day release to college or in-work assessments. You usually get paid for doing an apprenticeship, here's a definition:

"Apprenticeship is a system of training a new generation of practitioners of a skill. Apprentices or protgs build their careers from apprenticeships. Most of their training is done while working for an employer who helps the apprentices learn their trade, in exchange for their continuing labour for an agreed period after they become skilled. Theoretical education may also be involved, informally via the workplace and/or by attending vocational schools while still being paid by the employer."

Remember before you start off on your career get as much information as possible about it. Then, practice, practice, practice. Cook in school, cook at home for parents, enter competitions and try your food, all of this will prepare you for the hard work and dedication that you will need to succeed. Good Luck!!
