Fume hoods are equipments that are essentially used in the laboratory and in various industrial applications

. The main purposes of using this equipments are that they ensure safety and protect the user from the hazardous and dangerous fumes. This protection can be mainly done by keeping the air inside the air fume, which is away from the people conducting experiments.

FRP Fume Hoods also known as fibre glass reinforced plastic fume hood, are extensively used in laboratory, medicine room and milk factories. FRP fume hoods are advantageous as they act as proof against corrosion, acid and alkali resistant.

Initially, fume hoods were made of wood, but now as technology has taken its pace, these are constructed of mild steel and are coated with epoxy. Fume hoods can be classified into two types. These can be recalculating and ducted. These fume work on the same principal. A recirculating fume hood draws the air around the experiment into a built in filter and discharges the pure air that goes back to the lab or the cabinet. A ducted fume hood has the air drawn from it and into a ventilation system, where it is made pure and then is released outside the building.

The material from which fume hoods are constructed are carefully chosen between industrial grade and fire resistant commercial woods covered with laminated sheets and lined completely with epoxy coating or FRP lining or corrosion resistant steel sheets duly painted with attractive stove enamel. The work table is made of heavy gauge construction material fortified with acid proof glazed tiles. The work bench is also provided with a small sink made of stainless steel grade. Besides these, all kinds of fume hoods are incorporated with sliding sash made of special grade shatter proof glass duly framed in wooden or aluminium frame with sliding motion or counter weight balanced mechanism. This equipments assure minimum illustration levels of approximately 800 LUX, on the work table. FRP fume hoods are equipped with very diligent heavy duty exhaust system that comprises of dynamically balanced centrifugal impeller with high speed motor of approximate 1440 RPM that is controlled by DOL starter.

Though while using these equipments the user should be aware of the toxic properties of the chemicals, as there are chemicals that are over explosive; therefore it is necessary to take the required precautions. Until and unless there is no indication that the machine is opening, the user should not at all operate it.
