Chemical Peeling procedures and how it helps facial skin rejuvenation is the subject

To answer two frequently asked questions: What is facial chemical peeling? And why would anybody want to peel their skin with a chemical face peel ?

Well, chemical peeling is something that's been around for decades and was one of the first cosmetic procedures I learned when I started dermatology in 1986. And I started doing chemical facial peeling in earnest, in early 1990. Chemical peeling consists of putting a chemical on the skin that literally rearranges the skin, it exfoliates the skin and gets rid of sun-damaged skin. It can reduce fine lines under the eyes and mouth, treat wrinkles and improve the appearance of mild scarring.

There are three types or levels of chemical peeling that we have.

One is light or superficial.

One is medium depth

And one is heavy.

The one that I'd encourage everybody to stay away from is the heavy chemical peeling, also known as Phenol Peeling or Baker Gordon peeling. The reason why is that it used to be very heavy on the skin and have a lot of morbidity, a lot of downtime, and it pretty well has been replaced by better lasers that do a better and more predictable job.

The light or superficial chemical facial peel helps to get rid of the superficial layers of the skin. In fact, there is very little exfoliation and a person can go through their regular activities without downtime. What we find from a series of these, is that a person can get excellent facial skin rejuvenation without any problems.

The medium depth peeling consists of trichloroacetic acid. TCA is a great treatment but it does require some downtime and there is some discomfort and pain with this.
