Detroit of India , the rapid growth of Chennai's economy could be well-attributed to its industrial sector especially the automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries. The largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan, Detroit is known as the world's traditional automotive center. Detroit and the surrounding region is home to the prominent manufacturing centers of the Big Three automobile companies; General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. As per a report issued by the CII, Chennais economy is estimated to grow to an amazing $100-billion by the year 2025.
Chennai, rightly called the Detroit of India, is the second largest exporter of software, Information technology (IT) and Information-technology-enabled services (ITES). A major portion of the countrys automobile manufacturing industry is based in and around Chennai. Chennai hosts around 30% of India's automobile industry and 35% of its auto components industry. A large number of globally renowned automotive companies such as Hyundai, Ford, BMW, Mitsubishi, Komatsu, The TVS Group, Ashok Leyland, Nissan-Renault, Daimler Trucks, TI Cycles of India, TAFE Tractors, Royal Enfield, Caterpillar Inc., Apollo Tyres etc. have or are in the process of establishing their manufacturing facilities in and around Chennai.
Most of the software services companies have set up their development centres in Chennai, which makes the state second-largest exporter of software in the country, behind Bangalore. Some of the leading software companies like Amazon.com, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Hewlett Packard, HCL Enterprise, IBM, Mahindra, Satyam, CTS, MphasiS, Polaris Software Lab, Capgemini and Accenture have already established their offices in Chennai. Telecom giants such as Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer and chemicals giant, Dow Chemicals have set up their research and development facilities in Chennai. Chennai is also sometimes referred to as the "Health Capital of India" or the "Banking Capital of India as it has attracted large investments from International corporations and the World Bank and it is called as the
Detroit of Asia.
