Chicago Cubs Tickets And A Day At Wrigley Field
Originally known as The Chicago Base Ball Club they soon followed the trend like
so many other teams back then of adding the team's colors into their name becoming The Chicago White Stockings. Soon after in 1870 they served a 47-1 beat down to the St. Louis Unions in there very first exhibition game. After being placed in the NABBP, National Association of Base Ball Players, the White Stockings went on the win the championship that same year.
In 1871, their new season as professionals had some interesting events which included picking up a business financier, William Hulbert. The team became contenders for the season but in a disastrous turn of the events, they had their Westside home field burn in the Great Chicago Fire. This happened after a second place seasonal finish and forced the Cubs to drop out the league to regroup from the fire. Later that year the team would become involved in a contract jumping incident that would prompt Hulbert to suggest a better, stronger league which became the National Base Ball League.
During 1876, Hulbert decided to bring in some of the top players of the time. This move served to establish the Chicago team as one of the top teams recruiting the likes of Albert Spalding. The Stockings league hitting average would bring them the first ever highest National League honor, the pennant. A few years later in the seasons of 1880-81 the Cubs scored two more years of pennants and retired Spalding as well as taking on a new president due to Hulbert's death. During 1882 to 1885, the team was still clinching pennants. In 1890 their name was changed to the Chicago Colts and then the Chicago Orphans due to the teams acting manager/player leaves the team in 1898. The 1900s brought the rival American Base Ball League to the playing field and the White Stockings name was picked up by another Chicago based team on the south side.
The team had its roster revamped in 1902 and the Chicago Cubs were born. Within 1903-1912 the Cubs went on to win four more pennants and a World Series and lost the 1906 Series to their cross town rivals the White Sox, formerly known as the White Stockings also.
Since 1916 Wrigley Field has been the home of the Cubs. 50 years prior the Cubs and the Chicago Bears shared a cozy football stadium. Originally named, Weeghman Park, Wrigley is housed in Chicago's north side Lakeview area, with its brick walls covered in lush green ivy & a big green scoreboard still changed by hand. The surrounding area affectionately known as, Wrigleyville was given that moniker in the late 1980s. It is surrounded by apartment buildings, bars, and restaurants with baseball themed names that attract not only local Chicagoans, but visitors alike from all over the world. In 1941 the lights were installed for twilight games beginning at 6pm but no inning would be started after 8pm to avoid disturbing the local residents. After many proceedings and neighborhood protests the Cubs finally played their first night game in 1988.
