We see chickens as sources of food, they provide us with eggs and meat and thats how we see them

. But then they can also be good companions for us, a good way to learn responsibility and how to care for an animal. Having chickens as pets is becoming very popular these days and if you are considering to start having one, you can choose from the list below of breeds that are most commonly used by chicken owners.

Jersey Giant

This breed is huge and is a good egg layer. They are tame which makes them good to have as pets. This breed was developed for their meat but then as the years passed, they became more popular to keep as pets.

Brahma

Originating in India, this breed is not as friendly as the Jersey Giant but is generally calm and submissive making it ideal as pets even for children. They are big and have abundant feathers.

Mille Fleur

Also known as Bantam, they have upright tails and wings that are angled down and reach their feet which are short. They are very friendly and like to be petted. They have been used to enhance a garden during the early centuries. They love foraging and like to stay in wide open areas.

Cochin

Their colorful feathers are what makes them very attractive and what pet lovers like in them. They adapt well and are very friendly thats why they are being used as surrogates to chicks that have no mothers.

Australorps

Good meat and egg producers, this breed are very friendly and do not attack humans so they are safe to keep as pets even in homes with children. Children can pick them up and pet them. The eggs they produce are brown in color.

Ameraucana and Auracana

This breed has been developed in the US and has two varieties, the large and the bantam. This breed comes in 8 different colors and has many patterns. Their eggs are blue or blue green and are very popular with kids.

Some breeds of farm chickens are also becoming popular as pets because they are friendly and for their appearance. Leghorns, Sebrights, and Andalusians are now being raised as pets.
