Chiclone' in the Windy City: Tornado-like Storms Hit Illinois and the Great Lakes

Strong winds and torrential rain are pelting the Midwest, as forecasters predict the giant storm could get worse, becoming the most powerful to hit Illinois in over seven decades.

Dubbed the "Chiclone," the massive tornado-like storm "muscled its way across an area that stretched from the Dakotas to the eastern Great Lakes," reports the AP. Severe thunderstorm warnings blanketed much of the Midwest, and tornado watches were issued from Arkansas to Ohio. Flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport, a major hub for American and United airlines.

Weather Service Meteorologist Jim Allsopp said the storm could be among the worst to hit Illinois in more than 70 years.

"We're expecting sustained winds on the order of 35 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph throughout the afternoon," said Edward Fenelon, a weather service meteorologist in Romeoville, Ill. He said the storm's central pressure is equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane.

"This is a very different type of event," Fenelon said. "But that does give an indication of the magnitude of the winds. This isn't something you see even every year."

According to The Weather Channel, "in the United States, tornado season generally is in the spring when tornadoes are more prevalent from April through July, with May and June being the peak months." However, just like thunderstorms, "tornadoes can form any time of the year."

Before a tornado, or immediately when you hear a tornado warning, the following plans will help increase your chances of survival:

Make a Plan: Figure out the best spot in your home and place of work to seek shelter. You should identify the lowest, strongest place, like a basement or cellar.

Practice Makes Perfect: Regular tornado safety drills can make a difference in an emergency.

Stockpile: Make sure you have emergency supplies.

Learn how to shut off the power and gas.
