Chihuahua: Tiny Toy Size Puppies
Description
Description
The Chihuahua is in the tiny toy size category. They have large round eyes that are wide-set and dark colored. They have large ears that stand erect and their tails are long and curl over their back or on the side. The coat can be short or long and have a wavy or flat coat. They come in all accepted colors that range from solid, splashed or marked. Those colorings can be fawn, parti-color, black and tan, silver, steel blue, chestnut, black, white, sand or silver.
Origin
The Chihuahua is the smallest breed in the world and is native to Mexico. These tiny toy dogs are prized for their size and any weight under 2 1/4 pounds are the most valuable.
Temperament
The Chihuahua is very courageous for its small stature. They are very lively and adventurous. They crave affection but can be very strong-willed without proper training. These dogs should be well socialized and while they may be slightly difficult to train, it is not for lack of intelligence. They are quick learners and do respond to a firm but gentle training. These small dogs need to learn pack behavior in order to prevent behavioral issues such as jealousy, aggression and snapping at children.
Height and Weight
The heights of these dogs are 6-9 inches and their weight can range from 2-6 pounds.
Health Problems
This breed of dog is prone to rheumatism, colds, corneal dryness with secondary glaucoma because of their bulging eyes and gum problems. They are also known to gain weight easily, so their diet should always be watched. The puppies are normally born by Cesarean section because of the large size head at birth. They are also susceptible to fractures and accidents during puppy hood, usually because of their size. The molera of a Chihuahua, the unclosed section of the skull, may remain open throughout their life, which also makes the dog prone to injury. They tend to wheeze and snore because of their muzzles being small and short.
Living Conditions
Because of their small stature, they make great apartment dogs. They do not do well in cold weather because of their size.
Exercise
These dogs are very active and need to be walked daily and it helps prevent the dog from becoming neurotic.
Life Expectancy
Most of these dogs will live at least 15 years or more.
Grooming
They should be brushed occasionally or even wiped with a damp cloth. For the longer coated dogs, they should be brushed daily. Bathing can be done once a month, taking care to not get water in their ears. Always check their ears for mites or infection and keep their nails trimmed on a regular basis.
