Childhood Memories: Christmas, Halloween, Fourth Of July, And Barbecue Sauce

For all the people who have fond memories of their childhoods

, very few things can bring back those memories more than the taste and smell of barbecue sauce. Christmas always has its own file stashed away in the file cabinet of our minds, and many remember their Halloween fun too, but things like Independence Days at the park eating grilled food and running around with your friends until the fireworks went off at night are just as special. Food is such a strong trigger for great memories, and besides Thanksgiving, outdoor grilling moments always set in deeply.

So often we remember Thanksgiving so much for its general description more than isolated events. We remember mom's pumpkin pie or the great turkey, but it is because we have the same thing all at once every year, and just once a year. Christmas food is the same way, yet we remember our gifts more than the dinner. But backyard barbecues or town events at the park hold those memories tied to food and specific events for that special day.

You might remember that Fourth of July at the park when you hit the game winning home run at the family softball game, and then ate those ribs smothered with barbecue sauce just before the fireworks. That specific day is etched into your mind forever, and the ribs tied in to that memory as much as the home run. You may remember the backyard cookout on no specific day because it was the day your aunt slipped and fell into the swimming pool while carrying the potato salad outside. These events are everlasting and always enjoyable.

However you remember your greatest childhood memories, most of us all have at least one that is a Summertime memory involving something good to eat with barbecue sauce on it. These days as a kid are always priceless, and go away so fast. Remember how summer used to go by so fast and school was always right around the corner? That was partially because you knew once school started that your outdoor cookout days were gone for another year. It always seemed like every summer day you were eating a hot dog, hamburger, or steak off of the grill that your dad seemed to manage to perfection.

Know as a grown man you can only imagine how much impact you are having with your kids as you stand guard over your grilling domain while they stare at you in amazement of how well you seem to handle it all. Yes, someday these days will become etched in someone's memory the same way your summer days were.
