Chile Tours - Recommended Day Trips From Santiago

Santiago de Chile has plenty to offer travelers, but for those seeking to escape the urban sprawl and experience something different, Santiago's surroundings certainly do not disappoint.

On the Pacific Ocean, some 60 miles away from Santiago, is where the twin cities of Valparaso and Via del Mar are located. Both of these cities make wonderful day trips from Santiago, or are an excellent place to unwind for a few days. A perfect day in the leafy seaside resort of Via del Mar would involve hitting one of its renowned beaches during the day, followed by a trip to the elegant Casino for gambling, drinks, or to take in a show in the evening.

Valparaso, the country's main port, is located a bit further to the south and provides quite a contrast to its upscale twin. Its many hills are dotted with colorful houses which give the city a peculiar charm and make for an interesting way to spend the day roaming the streets.

West of Santiago is the location of Isla Negra, where Nobel Prize winning poet Pablo Neruda built his home. It now serves as a museum which chronicles the poet's life and makes for a great getaway from the city.

Winery tours are another fine way to spend the day, as Santiago is located in the heart of the wine valley and is surrounded by a variety of vineyards in almost every direction. The Concha y Toro winery produces famous Chilean brands such as Casillera del Diablo and Don Melchor and is certainly worth the visit, with its spectacular views of the Andes.

Winter sports are also popular in Santiago's vicinity and are best enjoyed between July and September on its many slopes. Popular resorts are El Colorado and Valle Nevado with over 20 runs each. Portillo is a dry powder resort which provides skiing opportunities yearlong.

Santiago's spectacular location near many of the best attractions in Chile means there are excursions to suit every travelers tastes.
