How To Find A Good Plumber
One that will:
- Do good quality work.
- Show up on time.
- Not leave a mess.
- And not charge me a huge amount of money.
These are common questions and ones we all have to face sooner or later.
Either as a renter or an owner, there will come a time when you need to know a good plumber.
You must keep in mind one thing. There are no guarantees. You can do everything right, and at the end of the day, you could still get ripped off. Water is wet, the sky is blue, and life's not fair.
But how can we minimize the chances of getting ripped off? Reducing the possibility of shoddy work or leaving a mess or paying way too much?
It all starts with doing your homework before you need a plumber. Most people spend more time arranging their holiday than they do in finding a good plumber.
One of the first things I do when I move into a neighborhood, I take the time to visit the businesses that are close by. This way I get a feel for how they're run and if they're friendly. I ask questions to see if they're knowledgeable and helpful. I also ask to talk to the owner. If they're going to get my hard earned money, I want to know where the buck stops in case of a problem.
There is nothing finer than if there is a problem, everyone knows I know the owner. This doesn't work as well if the person doing the work is the owner. In this case you'll need to be more careful and do more due diligence.
You could also check with the BBB, but I haven't had as much luck there as I would like. But they do track complaints and it doesn't hurt to give them a call. I don't base my decision on just a couple of complaints though because the world is full of complainers. Complainers who want everyone to know just how much the world owes them. It would be much more useful if they had a rating system like Ebay.
Ebay shows you how many transactions a seller has and how many disputes. So if you had 1000 transactions and 5 disputes, as long as they were resolved, then I wouldn't shy away from using them. Now if they had 10 transactions and 5 disputes, even if they were resolved, I would be looking elsewhere. So take review sites with a grain of salt. You don't know how many total transactions that company has had. And you're not made aware of how the dispute was resolved.
I ask my neighbors of any plumbers they would recommend. This gets you to meet your neighbors. Its like asking for a cup of sugar. This is a great way to break the ice and maybe develop a friendship where you can borrow their tools. Or go for a swim in their pool.
Now if your neighbor recommends a plumber, and that plumber does end up taking your marbles, don't blame your neighbor. They had a good experience and you didn't. That's all there is to it. Just maybe in the future you wont take their recommendations as seriously. Sshh. You didn't hear that from me.
This is where I start when I'm looking for a plumber. But you may need a plumber right now. And because, well, life gets in the way and you just didn't take the time before hand. Now you have an emergency and you need a plumber to come fix the problem right away. Before you float away or have your wood floor ruined.
