Chimpanzees of Ngamba Island
We took a vehicle at 7: 00 and headed for Entebbe our first stop over was at Uganda Wildlife centre , Lugard Avenue where we assembled to make sure all tour company representatives who had been selected to go for one day trip to Ngamba island chimpanzee sanctuary where present. We took a motorised traditional boat which took us about one hour and half to reach Ngamba Island. Before setting off, we all given life saving jackets.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by duty caregivers who look after the chimpanzee. After the warm greeting we were taken around and showed relaxing activities that tourist my do beside watching chimpanzee at the Island and these included; use of a swimming beach, kayaks, beach volley ball, information centre, large thatched area for relaxing and eating meals and kiosk selling drinks, curios and some snacks.
The pre- arranged supplementary feeding times are at 11:00 am and 2:30 pm. So since our group was big, we were divided into two groups. Before viewing the chimpanzee we were taken through an informative presentation explaining the background, aims an objective of the sanctuary as well as interesting facts about chimpanzees in general and in particular about the chimpanzees that reside on Ngamba
Being a sanctuary, local birdlife and wildlife is drawn to its quiet surroundings and over 154 bird species have been recorded on this Island as well as hippos and otters
We were there early enough to we watched both the morning and the afternoon feeding. This experience was really great, seeing and participating in feeding the chimpanzee is quite memorable. During this time chimpanzee come to within metres of the raised walkway. This also offers excellent opportunity for taking photographs as well as enjoying just being close enough to view the behaviour of one of our closest cousin animal relative with many behaviours similar to ours.
A total of 39 orphaned chimpanzees are resident on the island. Workers on the island are constantly involved in helping the newly arrived orphans to integrate into the original community, which spans an age range of two to 19 years old, with an almost equal balance of males and females.
The day turned out to be an exhaling experience on the island and I was glad I was part of the group that took time off to commune with chimpanzees and learn how man's closet cousin live on this island
