The four best-known schools of embroidery in China are Suxiu,basically from Suzhou, east of China, jiangsu province; Xiangxiu ,Middle South of China,in Hunan province ; Yuexiu ,South of China, Guangdong Province; and Shuxiu,South-west of China, in Sichuan Province. Suxiu embroidery, which flourished during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), acquired its name more than 2,600 years ago from Suzhou, its place of origin. Suxiu is known for its refined needlework and elegant style; in fact, over a century ago, the late Suxiu master Shen Shou won a gold award at an international exhibition for her embroidery portrait of Queen Elizabeth. Xiangxiu, a unique school based on the folk embroidery of Hunan, is characterized by its realistic style, vivid images,and bright colors. Yuexiu is distinguished by its well-conceived composition and decorative quality. Shuxiu has a long history and has 120 varieties of needle techniques alone. Brocades are mainly produced in Nanjing and Sichuan.

Suzhou embroidery consists of very detailed representations of almost any subject embroidered onto fine silk with silk thread: the distinction between near water and distant mountains, the deepness of chambers and pavilions, the liveliness of human activities, and the peacefulness of flowers and birds.

Suzhou Embroidery is the most famous needlework in China. During the Song Dynasty, the East Chinese city was famous for "each family doing needlework." During the Ming Dynasty, the traditional art formed its "exquisite and elegant" distinction.
