China Telecom Plans To Release Its Own Mobile Service In The U.s. In The Next Year
China Telecom plans to use its own brand to sell wireless services to American consumers
in the early of the next year, hoping to attract Chinese-American, students and frequent tourists between the two countries.
The service will provide users with two lines, respectively used in the two countries. China Telecom declined to give specific prices, but it is said that the pricing will be very competitive.
China Telecom hopes to expand the reach of consumer markets in the United States. It has selected several possible partners, and will choose one company to provide network services for it. If the business can be popular, China Telecom may consider building its own wireless network in the United States.
"If the service developesrapidly, we may build our own infrastructure." China Telecom said, "For us, money is not the problem." As of the end of the June of this year, China Telecom has total assets of $ 9.6 billion including $4 billion in cash.
Whether China Telecom can build or acquire wireless network in the United States depends on the assessment of U.S. government departments, for example, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission or the U.S. Department of Justice. Due to national security concerns, the U.S. government last month banned China's largest telecom equipment maker Huawei to participate in the national network investment.
In addition to fixed-line business, China Telecom also provides broadband services. It is China's third largest mobile operator. The company's broadband and mobile registered users are 191 million. The company also strengthens the traditional telephone service through mergers and acquisitions. Donald Tan said the company will invest hundreds of millions or billions of dollars in the United States to acquire fixed-line business, but it will not start immediately.
"We hope to engage in the acquisition in the U.S. and other countries in the Americas." Donald Tan said, "This is a fast way to grow." Verizon Communications and AT & T are China Telecom's fixed-line service users. Sprint Nextel and China Telecom have also achieved the interconnection of the traditional telephone network.
The wireless service will become China Telecom's largest project in Americas in the next year. As the largest overseas subsidiary of China Telecom, China Telecom Americas began marketing its services to U.S. companies a decade ago, providing fixed-line broadband connections to China. Today, the company began to turn to the consumer market, especially in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York and other cities with a large number of Chinese
