The chinchillas that were brought from the wild back to the America were grey, or dark grey. Over the many years since chinchillas have been here the colors have changed. Original Grey is a chinchilla with dark grey along the back but the sides of the chinchilla will have a lighter color grey. This is the most common color for the chinchilla.

Chinchillas also have a fur color of beige, and beige with red tints on the coat and ears. This color is found more today than in the past. This color will sometimes have pink on its ears, and the eyes are often a bright red color. This could be a form of an almost albino chinchilla.

Another color seen in today's times is a solid white chinchilla, these are often sought by the fur industry. It seems humans love long white chinchilla coats.

A chinchilla color that is even more sought after is the black color or the black velvet color; this color seems to make the best coat color for the fur industry. These can bring prices up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A chinchilla that is called a violet color is not purple at all. This chinchilla is called violet because it can have a purple tint to it in certain light. The violet color also is more apparent in direct sunlight. This form of chinchilla is considered to be a rare color.

A deep blue or a sapphire chinchilla is also a color seen more in today's times. This all came from the constant trial and error on the part of the breeders. There are also many other colors found in chinchillas. These are mutated colors. Many years of breeding specific colors to other colors chinchillas result in the mutated colors of today.

If you just want a chinchilla for a pet then you are probably not going to worry to much what color it is. Any color will do as long as the chinchilla is healthy and even tempered. These chinchillas are not expensive the colors are mostly common so these chinchillas can be purchased for around one hundred and twenty five dollars. Some could be a little higher in price depending on the color.

However if you are looking for chinchillas to buy and breed for the fur industry, you will want to choose the colors that are some of the more sought after or even rare colors. For the breeding stock of these types of chinchillas you will have to pay over forty five hundred dollars or more. As these chinchillas have the best quality colors and the best fur quality.
