Chiropractic Doctor In The Twin Cities Explains The Paradox Of Chiropractic Adjusting

The paradox of why chiropractic adjustment to a painful area of the spine doesnt hurt

, but instead relieves pain.

Hi...my name is Dr. Harlan Mittag and I'm the founder of Mittag Holistic Chiropractic in Minneapolis and St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

You may have heard of chiropractic adjustments and wondered if they hurt. The answer is no they dont, at least not if theyre done right, and not 99% of the time. Thats why chiropractors are still in business, people get relief and feel better after theyre treated by a chiropractor.

Why doesnt the adjustment hurt? Well, if youre hurting say in your neck, the first thing that I do is to massage and relax the muscles of your neck and upper back. I may also use heat and other therapies to get the muscles really loose and relaxed. Then I gently adjust the neck, so softly that it doesnt hurt. Many people say they experience immediate relief after an adjustment.

Sometimes people here a popping sound during the adjustment. I always explain to my patients what makes that sound. Its easy to assume that the sound comes from something tearing or breaking, or from bones pushing together. But it doesnt. If youve ever cracked your knuckles by pulling on them, you may have heard a pop. Thats the popping sound. It happens when you gap the joint just a little bit and its actually a release of pressure in the joint.
