It remains a mystery why lower back pain occors. There are clues but no answers. Some feel that it is strictly a mechanical phenomenon, i.e, just fatigue and strain of muscles and ligaments. Some feel it is caused by emotional stress. Still others think taht a ruptured or slipped disc is the trouble maker.

But noone understands why these occur.Many different kinds of treatment, from exercise to surgery, claim success, but the plain truth is that most peopl;e who experience back pain have had some kind of pain in their backs off and on for years and years, despite the type of treatment they receive.

There is no doubt that somew forms of treatment are more effective than others in particular cases, but even here we dont know why. For example, it is clear that some people are helped by daily exercise regimes, while others are not. In many cases they may not work at all.

It has been documented that emaotional stress can precipitate an attack of pain, but here again the reasons are cloudy. We are just beginning to understand the role of the psyche and the emotions in pain. One theory that expalins how the emotions can directly affect pain is based on the fact that our adrenal glands produce the hormone cortisone, which constantly acts to "de-inflame" tissues that become irritated in the body.

When we are under emotional stress the adrenal glands cortisone function becomes disrupted, causing a decrease in this cortisone production. According to this theory, the decreased cortisone activity is the major factor in recurrent pains of many types.

Although chiropractors care for more than just back pain, many patients visit chiropractors looking for relief from this pervasive condition.
