Chiropractic Treatment - What Is That Popping Sound I Heard?

A popping sound can often be heard during chiropractic adjustments.

Despite this, many newcomers to the world of adjustments find themselves needlessly worried over the meaning of the sounds produced during the adjustment. However, these sound effects, known as "osseus", are quite common and are caused when the bubbles found in the fluid of the body's joint pop and release gas. In order to treat misalignments, the chiropractor will move the joint of the joint cavity until the joint is in proper alignment.

Those who suffer from joint, neck, or back stiffness should not be alarmed by the popping noise during a chiropractic adjustment but should instead be glad of it. Adjustments are often successful in alleviating the pain and discomfort that typically accompanies misalignments. The process by which the vertebrae are realigned is caused cavitation, a procedure which results in the release of gas through the popping of bubbles in the fluid. This procedure decreases both the pain and pressure felt in the body and allows the fluid to fulfill its purpose of maintaining the health of the joint as well as that of the surrounding tissue and muscle.

When done correctly, these adjustments can help patients with more than just the pain in their back. Other joints in the body including the wrists, fingers, knuckles, elbows, and knees can also suffer from poor alignment. In order to prevent excessive friction during bone movement, the joints are covered with a slick material. It is not uncommon for the synovial fluid to produce air bubbles. Cavitation, the process by which the joint is adjusted so as to properly realign the vertebrae, can result in an audible popping or cracking sound which indicates to the chiropractor and the patient that the joint has been realigned so as increase mobility and decrease discomfort.

Due to the differences between joints and patients, it is not guaranteed that an adjustment to the neck or spine will result in a popping or cracking sound. If the synovial fluid does not produce a sound, this does not mean that the procedure was not successful. The lack of sound only means that the fluid does not possess as many air bubbles. Although popping might not necessarily occur, realignment will certainly improve the health of both your joint as well as the surrounding areas of your body. In order to alleviate pain, the treatment will apply gentle, targeted pressure to the area. Spinal adjustments will work to realign your joints and vertebrae so as to provide pain relief and increased mobility, regardless of whether an audible noise is heard. No more need to experience pain, discomfort, and decreased mobility due to spinal misalignment.
