Chiropractor Anaheim Ca | Understanding Scoliosis And Its Effects

Scoliosis is a term used to define a medical condition wherein a person's spine is curved side to side

. The most common form of the condition, idiopathic adolescent scoliosis, has no definitive cause, and likely stems from a variety of factors. Less common forms result from congenital sources or neuromuscular issues.

Scoliosis is more common in women than men, and it is estimated that 2-3% of the population is affected. Less than 0.1% of those with scoliosis have curvatures that exceed 40 degrees, the point at which doctors would consider surgery a reasonable option. Most often observed during late childhood and early adolescence, the condition can be treated with some success if caught quickly.

Physical Changes Caused by Scoliosis -

Due to the changes in the skeletal structure caused by scoliosis, individuals with the condition often exhibit specific musculoskeletal changes. Uneven musculature, hip heights and leg lengths, rib and shoulder blade prominence caused by thoracic rotation, general structural asymmetry and in some instances slow nerve reactions are all within the range of deviances caused by scoliosis.

Diagnosis and Treatment -

Diagnosis for most cases of scoliosis occurs during childhood. Prognosis is rather positive and most occurrences involve minor curvature of the spine. If a greater curvature develops then a number of options exist for treatment including exercises, braces and even surgery.

Bracing is most effective when treatment is applied to children who still have skeletal growth expected. The younger the patient the more successful the treatment is likely to be. As the bones grow, bracing or casting keeps the bones from bending further, and in some cases can even reverse the symptoms.

Later on, as adults, bracing may be used to relieve pain in severely compressed areas by providing support. Chiropractic treatments and physical therapy are also commonly used with adults dealing with scoliosis. Both practices have demonstrated anecdotal success in alleviating the symptoms of neuromuscular scoliosis.

Surgery is a Last Resort -

For patients whose degree of curvature exceeds 45 and is likely to progress, surgery is considered. Spinal fusion may be performed to prevent the curvature from increasing, but there is a commensurate loss of movement and rotation in the spine as a result of the surgery.

Additionally, it is possible to cosmetically correct deviations that cause ribs to protrude oddly along the front or back. While the surgery doesn't always correct the rotational aspect of scoliosis, it can produce a more normal appearance, and even better, improve breathing and other internal functions.

A new method of surgery includes the use of internal bracing through vertical expandable, prosthetic titanium ribs. The goal of these rods is to spread apart the ribs on the contracted side and straighten the spine in all three dimensions during growth. This surgery is only appropriate for younger children.

Another method that has been effective for children involves training and strengthening the muscles to maintain proper posture through childhood and into the adult years.

Living with Scoliosis -

For those who have developed into adulthood with mild to moderate curvature that affects their quality of life, several options exist. Physical therapy and chiropractic treatments can help strengthen the affected muscles and provide better spinal support. Common pain relievers and anti-inflammatory preparations can assist in controlling pain. Arthritis, if it develops, can be similarly treated as well.
