It happens to someone every day

It happens to someone every day. You are walking along minding your own business and you slip. It may be ice, it may be water, or any number of things, but the result is the same: back pain. Anatomy of the Back -

The back is made up of muscles, ligaments and nerves. The entire structure is based around the spinal column. The spinal column, full of vertebrae, tissues and cartilage, protects the spinal cord. As you may know, the spinal cord is essential for the majority of our functions. This is why spinal injuries are so dangerous.


However, it is not the spinal cord that most people hurt. The majority of the time it is the lower back. Weak muscles and poor flexibility contribute to injuries regarding the lower back.

Low Back Injury Prevention -

Most lower back injuries can be prevented - even falls. Now, we are not talking about watching where you are walking, but actual things you can do to prevent injury in case you fall. Following a few simple guidelines will greatly reduce your chance of injury.


1.Increase Flexibility - Most of the time when someone "pulls" their back, they mean they stretched the muscle past the limit. However, regular flexibility training can increase your range of motion and decrease the risk of injury. Some simple exercises can help.

a.Yoga - Yoga is probably the best overall flexibility and core training you can get. 15 minutes a day can drastically increase your flexibility.

b.Stretches - If Yoga is not your thing, then you still need to incorporate stretches into your routine. Consult a chiropractor or a physical therapist for the best stretches for your body.

2.Increase Core Strength - You core muscles are what you use every day to stay balanced. They consist of your abdominals, low back, and glutes. You can increase your core strength by:a.Yoga - Again, Yoga helps maintain all around health. It promotes flexibility and balance (core strength)b.Ball Exercises - Those big round balls are great for developing core strength. Some even come with videos to give you ideas on usage.Lower Back Injury Treatment -Once you are injured, you will want to rest for a day or so. However, too much rest is not advised as it has been shown to increase recovery time. If you are in severe pain or if the pain is not relieved in a few days, then you need to see a chiropractor. A chiropractor can adjust your spine (if needed), help with physical therapy, and give you nutritional support. The chances are you will suffer from back pain at some point in your life.
