I'm sitting here with a throbbing headache
I'm sitting here with a throbbing headache. Mine happens to be deadline induced, so I get them often. In this world of bigger, better, faster and right now, headaches are a daily occurrence for many. I'm pretty lucky as my headaches happen to be just garden variety stress headaches and go away as soon as I finish whatever project I'm working on, get a bit of fresh air and some exercise.
But there are other types of headaches all of which have varying degrees of pain and discomfort. There are tension or stress headaches like I experience, but other examples are sinus headaches, headaches from medications, and migraine headaches to name just a few. And no one suffers in the same way.
Sinus headaches can be caused by a sinus infection or sometimes seasonal allergies and the pain can be relieved with a quick visit to the doctor. Most sinus headache sufferers find relief with simple over the counter pain relievers. Headaches can also be caused by medications you take and if a headache comes on after you have begun taking a new medication check back with your doctor. Relief may come with a tweak in dose or a new medication all together. But if your sinus headache persists, get back with your doctor and discuss alternative treatments.
Migraine headaches on the other hand are a completely different animal. Those who suffer with migraine headaches have my sympathy. These hard hitting headaches cause debilitating vice like grips around the head and down the neck, causing nausea, restrictive movement, a sensitivity to light and sound and last for hours sometimes days. It has been found that more women than men suffer from migraines in part because of hormone fluctuation during ovulation or during menstruation. And women who are menopausal often experience these nasty unrelenting beasts.
Whether your headache is stress, tension, from your medications, sinus or migraine there are some things you can do to help yourself. If you smoke, quit, enough said. If you drink a lot of caffeine whether it's coffee, tea or soft drinks, the caffeine restricts blood flow which can cause headaches. So cut back a few or at the very least alternate between caffeinated and non-caffeinated beverages.
Exercise helps tremendously to relieve headache pain, because it gets the blood vessels open and blood flowing thru much needed areas of the body. You don't have to be a gym rat to get the benefits of exercise. Even a few minutes walking everyday will help to rid the cobwebs and relieve a minor headache.
Migraine headaches need medication along with your doctor's supervision. Talk with your doctor about your migraines, the severity, the length and how often they occur. There are very effective prescription medications that will relieve or lessen the pain and other symptoms that accompany migraines.
