, many of us can develop vertigo symptoms at some point in our lifetime. These vertigo symptoms can have a dramatic impact on our daily lives. Vertigo is a condition characterized by dizziness with a sensation of spinning. Because of the feeling of movement or rotation, many sufferers also feel nausea and can experience lightheadedness and balance problems. Vertigo typically affects 20-30% of the general population. People of all ages can be effected by vertigo symptoms, but typically becomes more prevalent with increasing age. Vertigo is classified as either peripheral or central depending on the location of the dysfunction of the vestibular pathway. Generally, patients with peripheral vertigo typically present with mild to moderate imbalance, nausea, vomiting, hearing loss, tinnitus, fullness, and pain in the ear. This type of vertigo tends to improve within days to weeks. Patients with central vertigo tend to have a much more difficult recovery, often seeing no improvement or slight improvement over a long period of time. Symptoms of patients with central vertigo include neurologic deficits (i.e. slurred speech, double vision) and pathologic nystagmus. The balance issues that accompany central vertigo are often so severe that a patient is unable to stand or walk. There are numerous causes that can lead to peripheral and central vertigo. The signs and symptoms of vertigo can present as a persistent (insidious) onset or an episodic (sudden) onset.

There was a study done examining the causal relationship of the nervous system and vertigo symptoms in patients. There were 60 patients treated in this particular study. Of the 60 patients in this study, 56 reported having some form of physical trauma prior to the onset of their vertigo. This physical trauma was delivered specifically to the head and neck area. Upon initial examination, all 60 patients were found to have a vertebral subluxation (nerve stress). Specific chiropractic adjustments were used to correct these vertebral subluxations, (take the pressure off the nerves) to all 60 patients in this study. The result of the study was that all 60 patients had a positive response to chiropractic care. The time frame for responses to care varied from one to six months, and 48 patients of the 60 were completely symptom-free within six months. The remaining patients showed significant improvement either in the frequency or severity of the vertigo episodes. In the conclusion, the author of the study noted, "A causal link between trauma-induced upper cervical (neck) injury and the onset of vertigo appears to exist. Correcting the injury to the upper cervical spine through the use of IUCCA protocol (a form of chiropractic care) appears to improve and/or reverse vertigo disorders."
